From 2005 through 2014, Chrysalis Archaeology worked with the City of New York Department of Design and Construction (DDC) to provide comprehensive archaeological services on two projects located in Manhattan’s South Street Seaport Historic District, one on Fulton Street, the other on Peck Slip. Chrysalis performed archaeological monitoring and testing in each area. Both projects were completed by mid-2014. Combined, the projects documented 183 features and recovered over 45,000 artifacts. Among the features, an extensive range of historic infrastructure elements dating from the early eighteenth century through the late nineteenth century was uncovered. Recognizing the potential for more rich history to be found, Chrysalis has since recommended that all future work be monitored in the area for archaeological material.
